Oxford University Press bets big on digital aid tool

Oxford University Press is looking to expand its course material and assessment offering in both print and online format

Oxford University Press (OUP), the world's largest university press, is betting highly on Oxford Educate, itsdigital aid for students, for increasing its business in India. Oxford Educate is a digital aid that integrates an e-book with interactive teaching tools and learning materials.

Ranjan Kaul, managing director of OUP India said, "Oxford Educate proves to be an advantage for teachers since it can run on a smart mode and also be shown on a projector. It is an exciting digital teaching aid for integrating interactive e-books, which include animations, audio and video clips, slideshows and other multimedia content for all key OUP school courses."

OUP launched Oxford Educate in February this year. It comes with a Test Generator, an assessment tool designed to benefit teachers by enabling them to create a variety of test papers. It is provided free of cost to schools using the OUP course books.

This digital aid incorporates a variety of resources: interactive animations, videos, poem and prose animations and audio for English Language Training courses, instructional slide shows, lesson plans, answer keys, additional worksheets, and image references, among others.

Kaul explained that when used in conjunction with the embedded tools available in the Oxford Educate platform, this would enable teachers to enrich and supplement teaching-learning in the classroom.

At present, there are about 11,000 schools in India which use the printed and digital course material of OUP, which completed its 100 years of operations in India in 2012. While Kaul explained that they would envisage all these schools to use Oxford Educate in the future, OUP is looking to tap at least 20 per cent of the schools to use this resource.

Since OUP also has a presence in smaller towns where there is a paucity of qualified teachers, Kaul opined that the response from smaller towns for this digital aid had been much better.

Apart from this digital aid, OUP is looking to expand in India by globalisation of academic content. "We are looking at sharing of research between countries, including India, so that academic research is more widespread," said Kaul.

Though OUP has books across all education levels, Kaul informed that there are not many publications available for Grades 9-10. In the coming years, OUP is looking to expand its course material and assessment offering in these grades, in both print and online format.

Keeping in tune with the increase in digitisation of books, Kaul also said OUP is currently making preparations to offer books that are in demand in a digital format.

One of the oldest English language encyclopedias- Encyclopedia Britannica - has been completely digitised. The company publishing this encyclopedia had decided in 2012 that it would not print any more editions and would instead offer it only online.

The International Children's Digital Library - A Library for the world's Children

Books from around the world
The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL)

The ICDL was initially created by an interdisciplinary research team at the University of Maryland in cooperation with the Internet Archive. Members of the team include computer scientists, librarians, educational technologists, classroom teachers, graphic designers, and graduate students from the University of Maryland's (UMD) College of Information Studies (CLIS) and the UMD Human-Computer Interaction Lab (HCIL), a leader in children's interface design.
Other important contributors to the research are the members of the College Park Kidsteam, a group of six children, ages 7-11, who work regularly with the adults in the Lab. The approach used is called cooperative inquiry, a unique partnership between children and adults to develop and evaluate computer interface technologies that support searching, browsing, reading, and sharing books in electronic form.
The ICDL is now the principal activity of the independent not-for-profit ICDL Foundation, which continues to work closely with the University of Maryland by providing generous support for ICDL related research in the Human Computer Interaction Laboratory and the College of Information Studies.
Here you find-
Fast facts, Videos, Digital Process

The ICDL Foundation's goal is to build a collection of books that represents outstanding historical and contemporary books from throughout the world.  Ultimately, the Foundation aspires to have every culture and language represented so that every child can know and appreciate the riches of children's literature from the world community. The International Children's Digital Library Foundation (ICDL Foundation) is to support the world's children in becoming effective members of the global community - who exhibit tolerance and respect for diverse cultures, languages and ideas -- by making the best in children's literature available online free of charge. The Foundation pursues its vision by building a digital library of outstanding children's books from around the world and supporting communities of children and adults in exploring and using this literature through innovative technology designed in close partnership with children for children.

Books for All : A Noble Social Venture

“Books for All” is essentially about making quality books available to underprivileged children in schools, where there is no library facility. This home-grown initiative is spear headed by Pravin and Kanchan Bhasin and they continue to be the guiding force. Pravin Bhasin is a professional Manager, with over 40 years experience in top Indian MNCs.

The initial idea was simplistic enough – to collect old and unused children’s books lying in homes like ours, where children grow up and grow out of the need for all such reading material. We convert one room into a cheerful library. Infrastructure such as a White Board, Soft Board, basic seating, and table to do artwork is also provided, so that the children could look forward to spend their free time and be encouraged to browse through and read the books.

There is a full-time librarian-cum-caretaker in charge of the centre who help the children to select books and further initiate the process of self-study.

Bookless Public Library Opens In Texas

An artist's rendering shows computer stations at the new BiblioTech bookless public library in Bexar County, Texas. The library is holding its grand opening Saturday.

An all-digital public library was opened on 14 September, 2013, as officials in Bexar County, Texas, celebrate the opening of the BiblioTech library. The facility offers about 10,000 free e-books for the 1.7 million residents of the county, which includes San Antonio

On its website, the Bexar County BiblioTech library explains how its patrons can access free eBooks and audio books. To read an eBook on their own device, users must have the 3M Cloud Library app, which they can link to their library card.
The app includes a countdown of days a reader has to finish a book — starting with 14 days, according to My San Antonio.
The library has a physical presence, as well, with 600 e-readers and 48 computer stations, in addition to laptops and tablets. People can also come for things like kids' story time and computer classes, according to the library's website.
A county official compared the concept to an Apple store, in a report on the library's plans by NPR's Reema Khrais in January.
And Reema reported that the idea of a bookless library has been tried before — perhaps a bit too early. That was in 2002, when Arizona's Santa Rosa Branch Library went digital-only.
"Years later, however, residents — fatigued by the electronics — requested that actual books be added to the collection, and today, enjoy a full-access library with computers," Reema said.
Sarah Houghton, a.k.a. the tech-savvy blogger Librarian in Black, who directs the San Rafael Public Library in California, told Reema that it will take more than 100 years before all libraries are paperless. But she added that 10 to 20 percent of libraries could go bookless in the next decade.
Some libraries have struggled to adapt to an era of digital options and budget cuts. In the Washington, D.C., region, the Fairfax County (Va.) library system's decision to destroy a reported 250,000 books drew the ire of residents — and an editorial from The Washington Post.

The Scientific Method

Science is supposed to progress a sensible, rational, step-by-step way known as the scientific method. We have an idea, a theory or a hypothesis. This must be in such a form that it makes predictions. We design experiment and tests to check the predictions. During the experiments we study, observe measure and access. We examine and analyse the results. If they fit the predictions, they support the original theory. After double-and triple-checking the experiments and results, we can move to the next stage. In this way we gradually build up a vast and interlinked body of knowledge and understanding, that stretches from the tiniest particles of matter, to the entire contents of the universe.

Introduction to Science

When do science begin?

Perhaps when early humans, more than a million years ago, picked up rocks and chipped them to form stone tools. Someone tried several different kinds of rocks.
She or he noticed that a particular type of rock produced a cleaner, sharper edge than the other types. This was one of the first trial-and-error series of experiments. Gradually other kinds of rocks were tested and found to be even better. Materials scientists do the same today, formalulating the latest metal alloys and tailor-made composites for special purposes.

Malala Yousafzai opens Europe's biggest library in UK

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl shot in the head in a failed assassination attempt by the Taliban, today inaugurated Europe's biggest public library in her newly adopted home of Birmingham.
The 16-year-old, airlifted to the city last year for life-saving surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, now lives with her family in Birmingham.
"This city is the beating heart of England. Birmingham is very special for me, because it was here I found myself alive seven days after I was shot," Malala said at the launch of the new 189-million pound Library of Birmingham.
"This event proves this city loves me and I love it too," she said as she placed her copy of Paulo Coelho's "The Alchemist" on the shelves among millions of books.
Malala also unveiled a commemorative plaque during the ceremony and received her membership card for the archive.
The new building contains the Shakespeare Memorial Room, home to a collection of 43,000 books, including copies of the Bard's First, Second, Third and Fourth Folio editions.
"A fusion of the digital and the traditional is absolutely essential to the vision of the library we have," library director Brian Gambles said in reference to the seven-year project he has led.
Malala was attacked by Taliban fighters on a school bus near her former home in the Swat Valley of northwest Pakistan last October. She was targeted for campaigning for girls' rights to go to school without fear.
She survived the attempt on her life and surgeons later inserted a titanium plate and a cochlear hearing implant.
Malala has since resumed her studies at Edgbaston High School in Birmingham. Her family continues to face threats from the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.
In July, she was praised for her bravery by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon when she addressed the world body's youth assembly on her birthday.
Malala has since been awarded the Tipperary international peace award and the international children's peace prize. Earlier this year, she signed a deal worth about USD 3 million to publish her story.

Student-run library reaches over 200 clients

Published: 09th September 2013 12:00 AM
Last Updated: 08th September 2013 05:26 PM
It all started four months back. Five friends got together and discussed their ideas to start an online lending library — I am a Book Lover. The library, which distributes books in the city, garnered over 200 customers, including students and professionals. The library is run by Shijin SS, Arundas S (both charted accountancy students), Ambu Senan (company secretary student), Remya R (MBA student) and Reshma S Jayan (BTech student).
The founders pooled in their savings to fund this start-up. When the CA students began doing their articleship as part of the course, the stipend amount too was spent on the library. Meanwhile, a small room was taken on rent and books were stored there. With the help of a friend, they designed a beautiful user-friendly website for the online library. They collected books in Malayalam and English and prepared an initial list of books after conducting a survey in places near their homes. Now the number of books has gone up to almost 1,500.
Bibliophiles need to do just this: log on to www.iamabooklover.com, become a member, choose his/her favourite from the list of books and it will arrive at their door steps in hours. “For upgrading the library and book collection, there are well-wishers who donate books for us. We may also go and buy books as suggested by our readers and have entered into tie-ups with book publishers. We also buy books from online bookshops,” says Shijin.
The inspiration came from online lending libraries functioning in metro cities like Kochi and Chennai, and ‘Book-lovers’ too dream of making it big one day. I am a Book Lover has books ranging in a wide variety of subjects including literature, business, history, humour, sports and education.
Delivery is done from 4 pm to 7 pm when these ‘book-lovers’ get back from college.
